Mountain bikes hurtle down the slopes, scooters take to the wooded paths, sled dogs carry you away, horses trot along while hikers survey the sun-drenched peaks. Next door, the Escalette mountain pasture welcomes the herds and their shepherds.

Panorama from the Escalette mountain pasture

At the foot of the Mourtis resort, a hike to the Escalette mountain pasture is a must if you want to discover a wide panorama over the Saint-Béat-Lez valley. This is an easy route along a wide forest track. The whole family will enjoy arriving at the mountain pasture among the ewes to take in the unobstructed views over the valley. An orientation table guides you to the summits of the Ariège, Hautes-Pyrénées and Val d’Aran. If you’re feeling more sporty, you can continue up to the mythical Pic du Cagire.

Starting with the sheep farmers, whose mountain pastures are at once a festive event, an agricultural commitment and a precious cultural heritage. Every spring, the flocks head off to the high pastures, where they enjoy a rich variety of grasses, while the shepherds perpetuate their ancestral skills. This tradition, which is essential to the upkeep of the landscape and the preservation of biodiversity, sets the pace for life in the resort.

The transhumance to the Escalette mountain pasture on 1 June 2025 offers a unique opportunity to discover their trade and taste the products of their work, such as ewe’s milk cheese. An authentic immersion in mountain life, where nature and tradition meet.
