MELLES
The Plateau d’Uls an exceptional and so sensitive site at almost 2000 metres, on the route of the GR10 to Melles within the Natura 2000 perimeter. The Uls plateau is home to a 183-hectare wetland between its pond and peat bogs.
Peatlands are well known for their ability to sequester carbon.
Peat bogs cover 3% of the Earth’s surface but account for 30% of the total carbon trapped in soils. The wetland on the Us plateau is recognised as a Sensitive Natural Area (ENS).
As such, the Uls plateau is regularly the subject of studies to measure its evolution, and in particular the impact of global warming.
Most recently it was AREMIP who took an interest in the evolution of the pond, moors and peat bogs on the Uls plateau.
