43 – LAC DU PORTILLON

Once you’ve passed the Oô, Espingo and Saoussat lakes, you’ll reach the refuge in a mineral setting. It is advisable to sleep here if you want to climb the surrounding peaks, 12 of which are over 3000m. If you’re in the high mountains, ask the warden about access conditions.
The Portillon hut (2570m) is also known as Jean Arlaud (Pyrenean climber 1896-1938, who died on the Gourgs Blancs ridge).

Description

Start at the top of the car park on a wide track through the forest, pass the sulphur rock and follow the path up to Lac d’Oô. Follow the GR10 or yellow markings (nos. 42/43) as far as Lac d’Espingo. Pass Lac de Saoussat and follow path no. 43 to the Refuge du Portillon.
Please note: no swimming in mountain lakes.
