Sainte-Marie Cathedral
Preserving a UNESCO jewel

An exceptional monument on the Pilgrim's Way to Santiago de Compostela

In the heart of the medieval village of Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges, Sainte-Marie Cathedral stands out as one of the most remarkable monuments in the Haut-Garonne Pyrenees. Built in the 11th century on the ruins of the ancient Lugdunum Convenarum, this Romanesque cathedral impresses with its powerful mass, lightened by fourteen slender buttresses that crown the climb from the roofs to the top of the town. Listed as a Historic Monument and a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the Pilgrimage Route to Santiago de Compostela, it is home to some exceptional treasures: two embroidered copes donated by Pope Clement V, Saint Bertrand’s pastoral staff fashioned from a narwhal tusk, and Henri IV’s medal. A major stopover for pilgrims on their way to Compostela, the cathedral continues to fascinate visitors with its blend of Romanesque and Gothic architecture.

An ambitious restoration project lasting until 2029

Following an initial phase of restoration work, which included refurbishment of the organ, the cathedral is now embarking on a vast programme of works lasting until 2029. The aim of this major project is to restore several major elements that have been weakened by the passage of time: the tympanum, the roof structure, the bell tower-dungeon, as well as the garden wall and the staircases leading to the Olivetan terraces. The aim is twofold: to ensure the safety of visitors and to preserve the architectural integrity of this age-old building. An ambitious project to ensure that this exceptional heritage is passed on to future generations.

A collective effort to protect our heritage

The commune of Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges has undertaken this restoration project with the support of the Fondation du Patrimoine. In addition to public funding, a collection of donations will enable anyone who wishes to do so to contribute to the preservation of this monument. This initiative demonstrates the shared attachment to this place steeped in history, where every visitor is aware of the need to protect such a heritage.
