The "Clé de France" opens its treasures to the public

Saint-Béat-Lez, a Pyrenean town steeped in history, is once again taking part in the European Heritage Days on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 September. This is the third year running that the town has taken part, as part of an initiative to share and pass on its cultural heritage, enabling visitors to discover the often little-known treasures of this unique area of the central Pyrenees. An exceptional religious and artistic heritage

Two emblematic sites will be opening their doors to the public to reveal their hidden treasures. The church of Saint-Béat will unveil its exceptional treasury, a veritable showcase of sacred art that bears witness to centuries of religious and artistic history. Visitors will be able to admire remarkable pieces of goldsmith’s and silversmith’s work and religious art, carefully preserved over generations. At the same time, the Moulin des Arts will be transformed into an exhibition gallery to showcase the pictorial universe of renowned painter Marie Féougier. This temporary exhibition, imbued with sensitivity and poetry, will create a fascinating dialogue between historical heritage and contemporary creation, perfectly illustrating the cultural vitality of Saint-Béat-Lez.

On the trail of the white gold of the Pyrenees

The history of Saint-Béat-Lez is inextricably linked with its white marble, the “white gold of the Pyrenees”, quarried since Roman times. This exceptional marble, recognisable by its immaculate whiteness and fine grain, has won over the greatest architects and sculptors. From the facades of the Château de Versailles to Parisian monuments and local churches, Saint-Béat marble has left its indelible mark on French art. The old quarries, veritable underground cathedrals carved out of the rock, and the village houses with their white marble facades, still tell the extraordinary story of this age-old industry that made the Pyrenean town so prosperous and famous.
