The Marathon des Pyrénées Haut-Garonnaises 2025 will be held for the first time on Sunday 5 October 2025. This 42.195 km race will link Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges, a UNESCO World Heritage site, to the spa town of Luchon. This first edition promises to be exceptional, offering runners a unique route through one of the most unspoilt and authentic areas of the central Pyrenees.
Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges is an ancient Roman town that became a major pilgrimage site on the route to Compostela. Perched on a rocky promontory overlooking the Garonne, this village, listed as one of the Most Beautiful Villages in France, offers an exceptional setting for the start of the race. The village has a remarkable natural heritage and a population of 233 in 2022, having peaked at 909 in 1841.
The runners will set off from this historic town steeped in 2,000 years of history, where Roman remains and medieval architecture mingle. The Lugdunum site and Sainte-Marie cathedral attract almost 80,000 visitors every year, testifying to the exceptional appeal of this Pyrenean heritage.
The riders will pass through authentic Haute-Garonne villages such as Valcabrère, Cierp-Gaud and Cier-de-Luchon, in an exceptional natural setting combining heritage and Pyrenean landscapes. The 42.195-kilometre route, with 533 metres of ascent, will take participants through the Garonne valley, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks.
Each of the towns they pass through will play their part in organising the event, creating a real people’s festival along the way. The villages will be decked out in their finest finery to welcome the marathon runners, with musical entertainment, Pyrenean songs and festive refreshment stands to punctuate this great sporting day.
The race will finish on the famous Allee d’Étigny in Luchon. The 560-metre-long Allee d’Étigny, planted with lime trees and formed by four rows of trees, is the backbone of this spa resort created in the 18th century by the Intendant d’Étigny.
The finish on the allée d’Étigny in Luchon will be marked by a lively finish village, tastings of local specialities and a prize-giving ceremony. Runners will be able to celebrate their achievement in this legendary spa town, gateway to the finest Pyrenean peaks such as Aneto and Luchon-Superbagnères.
Part of the proceeds will go towards a project to restore the Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges site as part of a sustainable tourism development initiative.
