Statue created in black St-Béat marble by Gloria Corona in 2008 for the Festival de la Sculpture et du Marbre de Saint-Béat-Lez.
The name of this work comes from the Occitan language and literally means “the mother”, emphasising maternity and feminine strength.
The artist pays homage to Pyrenean and Aranese women, and in particular to her grandmother and mother. She chose a dark marble for this, because its hardness makes it more difficult to work.
Gloria Corona, originally from the Val d’Aran, trained in Barcelona before setting up her studio near St-Béat-Lez in 2000. She offers sculpture workshops. She works in bronze, wood, marble and clay, with a preference for marble. She is particularly interested in the human body and its movement, evoking sensual forms.
In 2014, she was awarded the Senate Medal for her work and investment in the region, notably having been one of the pioneers of the Saint-Béat-Lez Sculpture and Marble Festival.
