SAUVETERRE-DE-COMMINGES

MAIRIE

A strange community, unique in France, where each village (11 hamlets) bears its own name, who came together and assembled under the name of Sauveterre, in the Middle Ages, to protect themselves from invaders. In 1936, for reasons of identification, Sauveterre added the name of its former county “de Comminges”.
The village of Sauveterre is dominated by a 567m high hill on which, quite naturally, a large feudal castle known as the Gaston Phoebus castle was built in the Middle Ages. Today, all that remains is an 11th century square keep and a chapel (Notre-Dame), which has been very well restored and maintained. From the top of this promontory, visitors are surprised to discover the superb surrounding panorama.
