Situated between the two major Midi-Pyrénées sites of Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges and Luchon, Saint-Béat Lez, because of its marble quarrying, was once known by the Romans as Passus lupi, the Wolf’s Pass. The passage was so narrow between the quarries and the Garonne that only a wolf could travel there at ease, or that it was so frequent that it seemed to exercise a right of passage. The Romans discovered and exploited the marble that made the reputation of this ancient city. Today, its festival of marble and sculpture still bears witness to this.
