Description

The current château dates back to the 12th century. It was built by the lords of Saint-Béat to protect the town and control the valley. It was extended by the consuls and, under Henry IV, the town was also surrounded by walls and equipped with gates. It was manned by captains-at-arms until the 16th century, and if necessary, the inhabitants of Melles were requisitioned to guard the place. The château did not suffer any major military events over the centuries, so it has come down to us in good condition. During the epidemic of 1855, a chapel was built against it and a statue of the Virgin was erected.
