Come and watch the Royal Opera House rebroadcast.
The peasant Giselle falls in love with Albrecht. When she discovers that he is an aristocrat engaged to another woman, she commits suicide in despair. Her soul joins the Wilis, vengeful spirits of women determined to force any man who crosses their path to dance himself to death. Riddled with guilt, Albrecht visits Giselle’s grave where he must confront the Wilis – and Giselle’s ghost.
First performed in 1985, Peter Wright’s production of this typical romantic ballet is a classic in the Royal Ballet’s repertoire. Carried by the evocative music of Adolphe Adam, and set against evocative scenery designed by John Macfarlane, Giselle depicts the material and ethereal realms in a world of love, betrayal and redemption.
Running time: 3h30.
